Activities

Speakers and Lectures

These cover a wide range of topics from all areas of archaeology. These include guest speakers, hands-on talks on artifacts as well as practical work.

Site Visits

We organise day trips to historical and archaeological sites. These include organised tours of some of the major British sites and Museums, as well as visits to areas of particulary acheaological importance.

Research and Practical Work

The Society is actively involved in research and practical work. This includes fieldwalking in the North Bucks area as well as an occasional small excavation. Finds processing, site planning and analysis of data are all necessary tasks associated with this work.

Social Activities

One of our objectives is to provide a forum for meeting people of similar interests. Our annual picnic, Christmas party and fun quiz are all part of our less formal side. For more information see our Current Programme
Fieldwork

Astwood Village Pond

The construction of the pond on the village green in Astwood began on Saturday 18th October 2003. Society members were in attendance to perform a watching brief. Other than a couple of old concrete standing for sheds, little was uncovered, and nothing of archaeological significance. Details can be seen on the Astwood report page

Excavation at Tickford Abbey

We hope to continue our excavations at Tickford Abbey soon. Excavations at Tickford were carried out over the weekend of 28th-29th July 2001.
The weekend was moderately successful. We uncovered another robbed-out medieval wall, with a probable Saxon occupation layer beneath. We also found pretty good evidence of the Priory gatehouse in the middle of the front lawn, with a wall tumble and a courtyard surface.
There were also a few interesting finds, including some rather nice fragments of painted glass, probably medieval, and an 'exchequer token' (C.17th?) i.e. a counter used for making calculations on an abacus-like chequerboard cloth.
Look at the Report for the Records of Bucks from our previous excavation at Tickford.
